ذخيره سازي نفت سرقت شده از خطوط انتقال نفت در نيجريه و پالايش يا فروش آن در خارج از كشور، به درآمد اصلي عده اي از مردم نيجريه تبديل شده است.

ژنرال جانسون اُچوگا كه به عنوان فرمانده يك كمپين نظامي عليه قاچاق سوخت تحت فرماندهي رييس جمهور گودلوك جاناتان انجام وظيفه مي كند، در اين باره به رويترز گفت: در سال 2012 نزديك به 2000 مظنون دراين باره دستگير شدند و 4000 سايت پالايش غيرقانوني و 30000 بشكه مشتقات نفتي و هزاران قايق نفتكش نابود شد.
